We have been using the same growing space for about eight years and had been quite content on the amount we could produce on the space we were using. Our main goal when it came to producing more food was not growing more, but instead growing better. We have been working crop by crop over the last eight years attempting to better production. For example, this fall we knew we needed to try new techniques to better grow fall carrots and scallions. The carrots were succumbing to a disease called cercospora leaf spot which is prevalent in our field. Once we figured out the problem we were able to find a carrot that had resistance to this disease and the carrots look much better this fall. For the past few years, the scallions would be decimated by root maggots caused by the onion fly. Once we realized what was happening to the scallions, we figured a row cover could take care of the problem and it looks like it has.
About half way through this season, we came to the realization that it may be time to increase our actual growing space. We are not perfect at growing all crops, but feel as though this would be the best time to add some more acreage to our operation. This week we will be knocking down the tree line that separates our main field from another usable section of land. We are really excited because it will allow us to grow more of certain crops that are in high demand. We are also interested in increasing our orchard with Asian pears. Once the tree line is knocked down, we will be able to increase our growing space slowly over the next three years.
We are really excited to get started with this new project and can’t wait to see where it takes us. Stay tuned for some pictures of our expansion!
